Ever read, I mean really read the ingredients on the back of the dog treats package? Many of the words are hard to pronounce, have numbers and are sourced in foreign countries that do not have a very good reputation with humanely treating animals and with other food products. So scary! And not to mention that over the last few years many treats available at grocery and pet stores across the country have been linked to death. This is unacceptable to me. This is a recent article where the FDA investigated 580 dog deaths possibly linked to jerky treats. So, with that being said, not only will making your pets treats from real food ingredients be safest for them, but will also help keep them healthy and happy, because they were made from love.

Paleo Peanut Butter Chia Flax Dog Bone Treats
Ingredients
(Yields enough for 10 bones, the pan holds 10)
- 4 T chia seeds
- 6 T flax seeds
- 4 T coconut flakes
- 1 cup peanut butter
- 2 T melted coconut oil to place in mold before mix goes in
- Dog bone mold I love this one because it is: Oven safe up to 450 degrees, Microwave safe (even though I do not recommend using a microwave), Freezer safe, Dishwasher safe, FDA approved non-stick silicone
Technique
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Melt your coconut oil. Mix ingredients together and place into bone mold. Lightly oil the bone mold with your coconut oil before mix goes into it. Place filled mold onto a baking sheet and bake for approximately 35-40 minutes. Let cool for about 10-20 minutes then place mold into fridge for at least one hour until the treat firm up.
I just store the treats right in the mold in the fridge until I have given them all out to Tucker, my GSD!
These are great to stuff into Kongs too, so that their chewing and treat experience lasts even longer. And as pet parents, we know those extra minutes where they are occupied is wonderful!!
P.S. here is the handsome devil himself…

Oh one more thought here: When I cook with flax or eat flax, I always put it in a spice grinder. Otherwise the flax seeds nutrition is not as easily absorbed. I am assuming that this could very well be the same for this recipe, and might try the flax ground. Have you done this?
Here’s a reference link that speaks of use of flax and why to grind:
Yes, flaxmeal is fine.
Can these yummies (bones) be made without a mold, just like cookies or will the coconut oil bleed?
Thanks for this recipe… Just what my 12 paws need!
You should be able to, you may need to adjust the amount of co or perhaps omit it. Feel free to let me know how that works 🙂 Hope they enjoy!!
Can you tell me if the coconut you describe in the Paleo Peanut Butter Chia Flax Dog Bone Treats is unsweetened? I would assume but I don’t make too many assumptions as they always bite me…lol I LOVE Chia seeds and flax seeds! I put them in everything I can. I use coconut oil in my coffee every morning and my dogs hear me spin the top off the jar and come running. Even they love the natural way of life. Im looking for a new recipe and this sounds perfect.
Hi Wendy. All my recipes use the classic extra virgin coconut oil or you can use expeller pressed which is the unflavored kind. I don’t believe there is a sweetened or unsweetened coconut oil. Your dog will love this recipe! Also, our pets need good saturated fats in their diet everyday just like we do. Be sure you are giving him/her a scoop of coconut oil in their food and/or a little chunk by hand as a treat daily. Animals really do know what they need and what is good for them. A dogs diet should be mostly proteins, fats and real bones, no grains. Enjoy!
