Tucker, my German Shepherd and I recently went to my high school friends house on 17 beautiful acres. While we ventured out on the 4-wheeler, we found two wild apple trees and picked as many apples as our bags could hold.
- 4 lbs of organic apples ~ 22 small-med sized apples
- fresh squeezed juice of 2 lemons
- 1-3 Tablespoons raw honey (You can use more if you like it sweeter)
- 1 Tablespoon Apple Pie spice
- 1 Tablespoon cinnamon
- 2 teaspoons himalyan sea salt
- Supplies Needed/ Recommended
- Apple peeler (this will save you tons of time) or pairing knife
- Large pot
- Immersion blender or food processor
- Pint sized mason jars ( I like the wide mouth because you can freeze or can)
- Peel and core each apple and then cut into wedges or chunks
- Pour lemon juice into pan
- Put apples into pan and stir well with lemon juice
- Stir in the honey
- Add just enough water to cover the bottom of the pan to prevent apples sticking (about ½ inch in the bottom)
- Cover pot and place on high heat and bring to a boil, stirring occasionally
- Once it boils, turn down to low heat, and cook until apples are soft ~20 minutes, stirring and chopping up apples with wooden spoon
- If you like the chunky consistency, you can now add your spices
- If you like it smooth, use your immersion blender or food processor to blend to the consistency you prefer
- Then add your spices to taste
- You can freeze for at least one year, place cooled applesauce in freezer safe bags
We use our applesauce, heated up on ice cream, on other desserts and just for a bowl of applesauce.
How do you use your apple pie applesauce?
