I love making homemade treats for my GSD, Tucker. Here is a simple, quick treat that is healthy, delicious and helps to support his health for healing.
From a previous article I wrote on how to make Homemade Natural Whole Food Chewy Vitamins:
“Gelatin is so important in rebuilding and repairing the body, especially the bones, tissues, hair, nails and skin. Bone broth may not always be available, so gelatin is an easy way to get the full spectrum of building amino acids in and homemade all natural whole food chewy vitamins are a perfect way for adults and children {and pets} to get a burst of nutrient that taste spectacular.”
Ingredients:
- 1 cup water divided
- 2 teaspoons bacon grease melted
- 6 teaspoons gelatin powder (This is a grass fed excellent quality gelatin)
- 6 teaspoons tart cherry concentrate
- 3 teaspoons melted coconut oil
Molds for shapes for dog treats:
- I love these bone molds here and here and this mini paw mold.
Technique:
- Note: Be sure to have all ingredients ready and set before beginning as you’ll need to work quickly once you start.
- Boil ½ cup water.
- Note: these steps need to be followed in this precise order for the recipe to turn out.
- Place ½ cup room temp/cool water in a medium sized bowl.
- Add 6 teaspoons gelatin powder to room temp/cool water and stir quickly to create a paste.
- Quickly add the ½ cup boiling water and stir again briskly.
- Add your cherry concentrate, bacon fat and melted coconut oil and stir. You should now have a dark cherry red liquid.
- Note: Have your mold(s) setting on a plate, baking sheet or other hard surface first and have your freezer shelf cleared and ready to set your mold on.
- Very quickly pour the mixture in to molds and then carefully move to freezer to allow to harden for about 1.5 hours.
- Pop out of molds and store in a tightly sealed container in the fridge for 10-14 days.
- Watch your four legged friend enjoy!
Hi, I just made them and are in the freezer… hope I did it right. The recipe says 2 tsp bacon grease but in the instructions it not mentioned when to pour it st all. I added it and the coconut oil but I’m thinking it was maybe one or the other…
Yes, that is correct, add it when you add the coconut oil. Hope you pup loved them!!
